ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 3 seed UCLA held off No. 6 seed Indiana, earning an 8-5 victory in quarterfinal action at the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship on Friday afternoon at Canham Natatorium.


Grace Reynolds led the Bruins efforts with two goals, matched by Indiana's Shae Fournier and Nicole Redder.

UCLA scored the first three markers of the game, including two off the hand of Reynolds. IU responded out of a timeout with a powerplay marker from Fournier. The team's exchanged markers in the second with a Fournier five-meter penalty goal coming early for Indiana and a Noel Umphrey rocket under the bar coming in the final minute to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead at the break.

Redder scored the lone goal in the third frame, pulling the Hoosiers back to 5-3 with quick shot off of a UCLA kickout early in a defensive third period. Less than two minutes into the final stanza, UCLA re-established a three-goal lead on a deflected floater Giselle Naranjo from the left side. Indiana's answer came from Jackie Kohl from seven meters 90 seconds later. The Bruins added to their lead on a skip shot by Emily Greenwood on the left post with 2:04 left on the clock, but Redder again answered the bell with a powerplay marker on IU's next trip down the pool. Kelly Easterday capped the scoring for UCLA with a goal from two meters in the final minute.

UCLA will play No. 2 seed Cal at 6 p.m. Saturday in the winners-bracket.  Meanwhile, Indiana and No. 7 seed UC San Diego will square off at at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
