NYIT 14, Limestone 13 (OT)
May 29, 2005PHILADELPHIA - Just one point separated second seed Limestone College (14-2) and third seed New York Institute of Technology (9-2) in the final USILA Coaches Poll. Therefore, it was only fitting that their Division II national championship match-up was decided by just one goal in overtime.
Senior midfielder Joe Gabrysiak provided the difference for Head Coach Jack Kaleys NYIT squad as his four goals, the last of which won the game in the extra session, gave the Bears a 14-13 win and their second title in three years. In addition to his four tallies, Gabrysiak also dished out four assists en route to capturing the Most Outstanding Player award.
It was my last game as a senior, explained Gabrysiak. I didnt want to go out as a loser and this was a great way to go out.
Although Gabrysiaks demeanor after the game was laidback and stoic, his move on the game-winner represented one of the most aggressive and memorable plays of the championship weekend.
I got matched up with a short stick, described Gabrysiak. I thought I could beat him on speed and then I popped [a shot] over the goalies shoulder.
Gabrysiak also received a great deal of assistance from his midfield partner Tom Zummo. The senior All-American contributed five goals on the day, including three of NYITs first four tallies. Gabrysiaks and Zummos efforts compensated for a Bears offense that was repeatedly stymied by a stingy Saints defensive corps led by sophomore goaltender Marty Ward.
The entire game ebbed and flowed as neither team failed to string together more than two-consecutive goals. A record crowd of 21,052 people may have fazed both teams as each committed numerous turnovers and unnecessary penalties. NYIT appeared to control the play for much of the first half but failed to pull away.
A combination of a disciplined defense and a balanced offensive attack kept Limestone in the game despite the success of NYITs dynamic midfield duo of Zummo and Gabrysiak. The Saints had six different players score, led by senior David Woosters four tallies. Senior attacker Robert Woody also recorded a hat trick on the day.
Limestone senior midfielder Patrick Cardiff upstaged his teammates efforts, however, when he scored twice in the final three minutes to tie the score at 13 and send the game to overtime. This was the third time that the Division II championship game has been decided in an extra session.
Despite allowing 13 goals on the day, NYIT put forth a superb defensive effort against a Saints attack that had averaged over 20 goals per game coming into the final. The Bears defense was especially effective against attacker Roger Vyse, the nations leading scorer. Although Vyse scored twice, the second of which broke a 34-year old Division II record for goals in a season with 71, he very rarely possessed the ball in the offensive zone.
Techs defense put a lot of pressure on me, said Vyse. They didnt give me a chance to see the ball much.
When Vyse did get the ball, he seemed to have trouble solving Bears senior goaltender Anthony Litterel. Litterel ended up with 12 saves in the game, including a huge save on Brad Patridge with his team trailing by one and just under six minutes remaining.
This game represented the third-consecutive year that Limestone has lost in the title game and the second-straight year in which the Saints lost in overtime. This lost had to be especially difficult for Limestone to stomach, considering that it had already beaten previously undefeated LeMoyne on the road to get to the championship game.
First-year Limestone Head Coach Chris Hasbrouck, however, took a positive approach to his teams defeat.
We played hard all year and got better every day, explained Hasbrouck. I think we can take consolation in the fact that people were coming up to us and telling us what a great game it was to watch.
Unfortunately for Hasbrouck and company, the other team had the best player on the field and he made the games best play.
[Gabrysiak] had a great game in the biggest game. said Kaley, Thats what the best do and hes one of the best.
