SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior kicker Eric Dobratz knuckled in a 32-yard field goal with 2:11 left in regulation to lift Shepherd University to a 19-16 win over Fairmont State in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Fairmont State took a 6-0 lead with 6:07 left in the first quarter when Logan Moore teamed with Matt Wilmer on a 34-yard scoring play. Senior linebacker Brian Taylor (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) blocked the extra point attempt.
Shepherd cut the lead to 6-2 when Howard Jones sacked Moore, who fumbled into the end zone. A Fairmont State offensive lineman recovered the fumble in the end zone for the Falcons to give the Rams a safety.
The Rams took a 9-6 lead into the break on a four-yard run by junior running back Nate Hoyte (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) with 2:13 left in the half.
Junior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, MD/Quince Orchard) scored on a one-yard plunge with 4:15 left in the third quarter to cap a 15-play, 54-yard drive and give the Rams a 16-6 advantage.
The Falcons cut the lead to 16-9 when Ben Landis nailed a 25-yard field goal with 14:53 left in the fourth quarter.
Fairmont State tied the game at 16-16 on a 13-yard scoring strike from Moore to Patrick Pinchinat with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore defensive back Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock), who had a pair of interceptions on the day, picked off a Moore pass with just over a minute to play to seal the win for the Rams.
Senior quarterback Kevin Clancy (Westminster, MD/Westminster) completed 13-of-18 passes for 138 yards, while Moore was 11-of-25 for 151 yards for Fairmont.
Junior wide receiver Robert Byrd (Alexandria, VA/Troy) had three catches for 39 yards to lead the Ram receiving corps. Perry Baker had four receptions for 26 yards to lead the Falcons.
Addison had 18 carries for 44 yards to lead the Shepherd ground game. Pinchinat had a game-high 64 yards on 14 carries for Fairmont.
Sophomore free safety Corey Washington (Alexandria, VA/Edison) led the Rams with a team-high eight tackles. Taylor and sophomore linebacker Leons Kabongo (Woodbridge, VA/Gar-Field) each added six stops. Dan Dario recorded a game-high 15 tackles for the Falcons.
Shepherd improves to 3-0, 1-0 in WVIAC play, while Fairmont falls to 2-1, 0-1.
