SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Sports Network) - Terrance Cain threw two touchdowns and Eddie Wide added a pair of scores on the ground, as 20th-ranked Utah routed UNLV, 38-10, in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.
Cain was 13-of-20 for 207 yards and Wide rushed for 77 yards on 15 carries for the Utes (2-0, 1-0 MWC), who have won 19 consecutive home games. It is the second-longest home win streak in school history. The school record is 26 set from 1928-34.
Omar Clayton completed 18-of-37 passes for 217 yards in the loss for the Rebels (0-2, 0-1).
The Rebels went three-and-out to begin the game, and a productive punt return set up Utah in excellent field position. Starting from the UNLV 32-yard line, the Utes, though, were able to only gain five yards and forced to settle for a Joe Phillips 44-yard field goal.
UNLV tied the game on its next series as Nolan Kohorst converted a 28-yarder with 3:16 left in the opening quarter.
The Utes moved ahead in the second stanza. Wide dashed three yards for a score and Utah took a 17-3 lead after Cain threw a 20-yard TD pass to Jereme Brooks in the final minute of the half.
Cain hooked up with Shaky Smithson on a 55-yard strike on the opening series of the third quarter to give Utah a 24-3 lead.
UNLV trimmed its deficit when Tim Hasson returned a blocked punt 19 yards to the end zone. However, a 77-yard punt return by Smithson put the Utes up 31-10 with just under 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the third frame.
Wide provided an exclamation point with a 13-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
