ARMY: The Army Black Knights pulled off a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback
in Saturday's 31-27 season-openning victory over Eastern Michigan. Fullback
Jared Hassin, making his collegiate debut, found the end zone on a seven-yard
run with 38 seconds remaining to lift Army to the win. He finished with three
touchdowns and 68 yards rushing on just 12 carries. As a team, Army rushed for
309 yards and averaged 5.6 ypc. Defensively, the Black Knights have some work
to do as EMU quarterback Alex Gillett racked up 126 yards and a touchdown on
the ground, while Dwayne Priest led all rushers with 142 yards and two scores.
The Black Knights are home to face Hawaii and North Texas in the next two
weeks.
NAVY: Navy opened its season on Monday afternoon against Maryland at M&T Bank
Stadium in Baltimore, and despite battling hard, dropped a 17-14 decision to
the Terrapins. The Midshipmen outgained Maryland, 485-272, and held the ball
for nearly 40 minutes, but a lack of scoring punch (2-of-7 on red-zone
chances) led to the team's downfall. FB Vince Murray ran for 112 yards on 14
carries to lead the Navy ground attack, while RB Gee Gee Green rushed for 74
yards on seven totes, for an average of 10.6 ypc. QB Ricky Dobbs threw for
just 73 yards, but added 63 yards and a TD on the ground. The Mids will try to
even their record at 1-1 when they welcome Georgia Southern to Annapolis this
Saturday.
NOTRE DAME: New head coach Brian Kelly guided the Fighting Irish to a 23-12
win over Purdue in his debut in South Bend. Only three of Notre Dame's 29
coaches all-time have lost their first game, and the last was Lou Holtz in
1986. Also making his debut was new starting quarterback Dayne Crist, who
threw for 205 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-26 accuracy. On the ground,
Armando Allen had some big holes to run through, and he finished with 93 yards
and a touchdown on 18 carries (5.2 ypc). The Irish had a 20-3 lead entering
the fourth quarter, although Purdue made things interesting in the final
frame. The UND defense held the Boilermakers to 3.2 yards per carry as a team,
while also notching four sacks and two interceptions. The Irish host Big Ten
foe Michigan this Saturday.
