EUGENE, Ore. - Darron Thomas, Kenjon Barner and D.J. Davis all had monster numbers for the Green, but it was the Oregon White team that prevailed, 26-21, in front of a record 25,211 fans in the annual Spring Game at Autzen Stadium.
The White scored early and late, withstanding three Green touchdowns in between. True freshman cornerback Terrance Mitchell set the tone by picking off Thomas on the opening drive of the game and returning the ball 46 yards for a touchdown.
With a 7-0 lead before ever taking the field, the White offense made the most of its first series, driving 69 yards in four plays, capped by a 1-yard plunge by Remene Alston Jr. to go ahead 14-0. Nate Costa had completions of 38 yards to Garrett Davis and 28 yards to Lavasier Tuinei to set up Alston's short run.
Thomas and Barner led the Green back on the ensuing drive to cut the lead in half. The redshirt sophomore quarterback hit tight end David Paulson for a key 22-yard pickup on 3rd-and-2, and Barner slashed his way through the defense for a 37-yard gain on the next play.
Facing 3rd-and-goal from the 6-yard line, Barner used a block from right tackle C.E. Kaiser and cut inside for the score.
After a 29-yard field goal from Rob Beard, Thomas found D.J. Davis for a 68-yard touchdown on a flea flicker to pull within three points at 17-14. Thomas was 3-of-3 on the drive for 83 yards.
Green finished off the opening half with a 10-play, 74-yard drive capped by Barner's 1-yard touchdown run to take its only lead of the day at 21-17.
Third-string quarterback Daryle Hawkins took over for Costa to start the second half and guided the White to what proved to be the game-winning scoring drive. Hawkins, along with running backs Andres Reed and Brandon Thurston, took turns toting the ball on the seven-play drive finished off with a 6-yard run by the QB. Reed's 45-yard scamper was the key play.
Barner led all players with 96 yards on nine carries. He also had a 20-yard reception to finish with 116 all-purpose yards - all in the first half.
Thomas completed 15 of 23 attempts for 196 yards. He tossed one interception and one touchdown. Costa was 7 of 13 for 104 yards for the White.
D.J. Davis made five catches for 88 yards. His Green teammate Justin Hoffman also had five grabs totaling 44 yards.
Reed was the leading rusher for the White team, gaining 55 yards on five carries.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Bo Lokombo had a game-high six tackles for the White. Mitchell added five tackles to go along with his interception.
The Green squad was paced on defense by Spencer Paysinger, who had four unassisted tackles, including 1.0 tackle for loss.
