CINCINNATI, Ohio (Sports Network) - Tommy Tuberville has resigned his head coaching position at Texas Tech to take a similar job at Cincinnati.

The shocking news came Saturday afternoon, with the University of Cincinnati scheduling a press conference for 6:30 p.m. (ET) to introduce Tuberville.

The news of Tuberville's move came one day after Butch Jones announced he was leaving the Bearcats to become the head football coach at Tennessee. Jones resigned from his position at Cincinnati Friday morning.

Cincinnati named Steve Stripling interim head coach for the Belk Bowl against Duke.

Tuberville led the Red Raiders to a 7-5 mark this season. Texas Tech will play Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas on Dec. 28.

The 58-year-old Tuberville will become the head coach for his fourth collegiate team. He went 25-20 at Ole Miss from 1995-98 and compiled an 85-40 mark at Auburn (1999-2008) before going 20-17 over three years at Texas Tech.
