Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson and Army linebacker Geoffery Bacon have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through November 3rd. Golson is the recognized on Offense, while Bacon is cited on Defense. The weekly award is Golson’s second consecutive and third overall; Bacon is a two-time honoree.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Notre Dame QB Everett Golson
A sophomore from Myrtle Beach, S.C., Golson led Notre Dame back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, sparking the Irish on their way to a 29-26 triple overtime win over visiting Pittsburgh. With the Irish trailing by eight points and only three minutes remaining in regulation, Golson conducted a quick-strike 50-yard drive that culminated with his five-yard touchdown toss; he then scrambled in for the game-tying two-point conversion that sent the contest to overtime. In the third extra session, a six-yard Golson run converted a key third down, and was immediately followed by his game-winning one-yard TD plunge. Golson finished with a career-high 74 rushing yards and the clinching score, while also completing 23 of 42 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Army LB Geoffery Bacon
A sophomore from Milwaukee, Wis., Bacon registered a team-high 13 takedowns and added an interception in Army’s 41-21 home win over Air Force. Nine of Bacon’s tackles were solo stops, and included a half-tackle for loss; he topped the ten-tackle plateau for a fourth consecutive week and sixth time this season. Bacon’s second career interception came with Air Force driving deep into Army territory and trying to narrow a ten-point deficit before halftime; he returned the interception 31 yards to the Falcons’ side of the field, helping set up a field goal that gave the Black Knights a 20-7 lead at the break. The win snapped Army’s six-game losing streak against the Falcons and also ended a 13-game losing skid in the Commander In Chief’s Trophy series.
