Seniors Tavon Austin (West Virginia), Kenny Cain (TCU) and Ryan Doerr (K-State) have been named Big 12 Football Players of the Week, as selected by a media panel. All three earned their first Conference weekly honor.
Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
Tavon Austin, West Virginia, WR, Baltimore, Md.
Tavon Austin caught 13 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns in West Virginia's 31-21 win over Maryland. The 13 receptions matched a school record set last week by Stedman Bailey. The receiving yardage was the second-highest of Austin's career and marked the second consecutive game, and ninth in his career, in which he has recorded over 100 yards. Austin's touchdown receptions covered 44, 24 and 34 yards, giving him five scoring catches on the season and 22 for his career. The senior set the WVU career record for receptions in the fourth quarter and ended the game with 208. He is now tied at No. 2 on the career touchdown receptions chart with 22 and also moved up to No. 2 in career receiving yards with 2,469.
Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
Kenny Cain, TCU, LB, Sr, Metairie, La.
Kenny Cain had a part in three takeaways with two interceptions and a fumble recovery in TCU's 27-7 win against Virginia. The turnovers led to 10 points for the Horned Frogs. Cain became the first TCU linebacker with two interceptions in a game since 1999, and totaled 56 yards on the returns. The senior added four tackles, including a tackle-for-loss and a quarterback hurry as TCU held Virginia to a 3-of-16 mark on third-down conversions. The Cavalier's score with 4:22 left in the game was the first touchdown TCU has surrendered this season.
Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
Ryan Doerr, K-State, P, Sr, Katy, Texas
Punter Ryan Doerr played a pivotal role in the battle of field position as K-State defeated Oklahoma on its home turf 24-19. All five of his punts were downed inside OU's 20-yard line, including two inside the 10. Oklahoma was forced to start seven of its 10 drives inside its own 25-yard line. Doerr's longest punt of the night went for 49 yards.
