HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Hampden-Sydney Tigers (2-0, 0-0 ODAC) used 35 unanswered first half points to roll to a 42-20 victory over Christopher Newport University (0-2, 0-0 USA South) in the 2012 home opener at Everett Stadium. The Tigers will head into the bye week before remaining at home on September 22 against the Hawks of Huntingdon College.
Sophomore quarterback Nash Nance (Calhoun, GA/Tennessee) looked solid in his home debut, tossing five touchdowns on 25-of-31 passing to go with 339 yards. While hitting ten different receivers, sophomore Holton Walker (Lynchburg, VA/Brookville) was his top target with 144 yards and a pair of scores on six receptions.
Nance and Walker hooked up on the first score of the day - just under two minutes into the game - on a 36-yard touchdown pass.
The defense forced a three-and-out with its first stint on the field, and the offense capitalized. Four and a half minutes after Hampden-Sydney got the ball back, Evan King (Lewisburg, WV/Episcopal) ran in the end zone on a 5-yard score.
The second quarter started much like the first with Walker scoring on a 36-yard touchdown reception and then King scoring - though his second touchdown coming on a 14-yard pass from Nance - to put Hampden-Sydney up 28-0.
Christopher Newport then drove 57 yards to the Hampden-Sydney 18-yard line. After John Moore (Powhatan, VA/Blessed Sacrament-Hugenot) stopped running back Morcus Morrast behind the line of scrimmage and Kenny Fryman (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) halted Kentel Noel at the line, the Captains were forced into a field goal situation. Mason Studer had the distance but missed wide left.
Hampden-Sydney had the same fortune on its ensuing drive with a missed field goal, but scored on its next attempt as Michael Mey (Glen Allen, VA/VMI) hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Nance.
The Tigers managed one more score - this on their only drive of the third quarter. After using five minutes on a drive that started on their own nine yard line, the Tigers capped of a 91-yard scoring drive with an 11-yard touchdown catch from Jalen Wood (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill).
After being held scoreless for three quarters, the Captains erupted for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come closer, but it was not enough. The last score came with under two minutes to play, and Hampden-Sydney was able to run the clock out.
The Tigers amassed 484 yards of offense behind 339 yards from Nance. The sophomore also added 42 rushing yards on seven carries. King led the ground game with 82 yards and a score on 16 carries. With his 31 receiving yards on six receptions, King notched his second straight game with over 100 all-purpose yards (113, 2 TDs). Regis Craft (Nottoway, VA/Burkeville) also added 25 yards on five carries.
Defensively, Fryman led the way with a game-high nine tackles. Steven Fogleman (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) and Alex Price (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) each added eight stops. Zach Morgan (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) added five tackles and the game's lone interception.
Christopher Newport tallied 450 yards of total offense via 309 passing yards and 141 rushing yards. Christian Woelfel-Monsivais led the trio of quarterbacks with 149 yards and two touchdowns on 11-of-16 accuracy. Chris Coiner was the top target with 89 yards and a touchdown on six catches. Ten different Captains had at least one reception.
Morrast led the running game with 73 yards on 14 carries, and Markeese Stovall added 57 yards on 13 carries.
