- Northwestern State quarterback Paul Harris, who led the Demons to their fourth consecutive victory with a 35-16 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, was named the Southland Conference offensive player of the week, the league announced Monday. Additionally, McNeese State safety Darrell Jenkins was named the conference defensive player of the week and Stephen F. Austin return specialist Gralyn Crawford was named the conference special teams player of the week.
Offensive Player of the Week: Paul Harris, Northwestern State
Harris set school single-game record with 11 consecutive completions in the first half of the win over Southeastern Louisiana. The sophomore from Baton Rouge, La. (Tara), completed 20-of-29 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns, tying the record he already shares with four others. Harris, who added 22 yards rushing on seven carries, led the Demons on three straight scoring drives to open game with 21-0 lead. The road victory was the Demons’ third straight away from home and fourth consecutive overall.

Defensive Player of the Week: Darrell Jenkins, McNeese State
Jenkins led the defense in the 33-28 victory at Sam Houston State. The junior from Bon Weir, Texas (Newton), finished the game with seven tackles, including two sacks totaling seven yards. He made key plays in the final quarter that turned Sam Houston away from goal line and picked off a mid-air fumble at the Cowboys’ 16-yard line with seven minutes to go to halt a drive.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Gralyn Crawford, Stephen F. Austin
Crawford opened the second half with a 99-yard kick return for a score, effectively slamming the door on any come back from Nicholls, which already trailed 34-3 at halftime. The return was the second-longest return in school history and marked the second time this season that the sophomore from Palestine, Texas (Westwood), has returned a kick for a score. Crawford had two kick returns for 118 yards, returned five punts and added 41 yards receiving on three catches to finish with 164 all-purpose yards.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
