- The Newberry College Wolves failed to put a cap on the explosive Carson-Newman offense as the Eagles soared to a 35-13 win here, Saturday afternoon.
Newberry (3-5, 2-3 South Atlantic Conference) allowed 472 yards of total offense to Carson-Newman (6-3, 4-1 SAC), 451 of which were on the ground.
The Wolves kept things close, going into half time down just 14-10, but 14 third quarter points and one more touchdown in the fourth would seal the deal for the Eagles.
The one-two rushing punch of Tyron Douglas and Doug Belk combined for 369 yards, 186 for Douglas and 183 for Belk, with Douglas scoring four touchdowns.
Newberry quarterback Taniel Massey threw for 102 yards and was good on seven of his 12 pass attempts. Brandon Bostick led all receivers with six receptions for 73 yards while teammate David Pressley inched closer to the all time single season reception record with his 10 catches for 62 yards.
Carson-Newman was also the victim of six Newberry takeaways with five fumble recoveries by the Wolves defense and a pass interception by Ron Parker. The interception was Parker's fifth of the season.
The Wolves will take to the field again Saturday, Nov. 6, as they travel to Brevard for a 2 p.m. game at Asheville High School in Asheville, N.C.
