NEWPORT NEWS, Va
. -- Ferrum dropped a 27-21 USA South football game to Christopher Newport this afternoon on the road. The loss stopped a three-game win streak for Ferrum. The Panthers scored a touchdown with 3:11 remaining in the game, then successfully converted an onside kick, but could move the ball just 19 yards before turning it over on downs and watching as the Captains run out the clock.
CNU placekicker Stephen Denuel split the uprights from 35 yards out at 6:42 of the first quarter to open scoring. On Ferrum's ensuring drive, QB Marcus Mayo<http://www.ferrumpanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1487> ran 35 yards to the CNU 19 yard line on the first play. Two plays later, Mayo connected with RB Steven Harris<http://www.ferrumpanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1399> for a 17-yard TD pass to put Ferrum on top 7-3 at the 5:27 mark.

T.J. Foster hauled in a 52-yard TD pass from Christian Woelfel-Monsivais on the first play from scrimmage to give the Captains a 17-14 lead just 16 seconds into the second half. It would prove to be the only score of the third quarter.

Kicker Wesley Franklin's<http://www.ferrumpanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1455> onside kick was recovered by the Panthers at their own 41 yards line, and Ferrum had an opportunity to post a come-from-behind win.
A pair of Mayo runs moved the ball to the CNU 36, but a holding call pushed it back to mid-field where Ferrum faced 1st and 15 at the 50 yard line. The Panthers were then unsuccessful on four straight pass attempts, allowing CNU to take over on downs and run out the final 1:12 on the clock.
