Shepherd Outlasts Concord, 49-35

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior running back Tommy Addison rushed 23 times for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 49-35 win over Concord in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

The Rams took a 7-0 lead on an 11 yard pass from senior quarterback Kevin Clancy (Westminster, MD/Westminster) to junior wide receiver Nikkolai Norrell (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) with 3:23 left in the first quarter. Junior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) added the extra point.

The Rams took a 14-0 lead when redshirt freshman linebacker Dominique Dixon (Westover, WV/University) picked off a Zack Grossi pass and raced 32 yards for a score with 3:06 left in the first quarter.

Concord cut the lead to 14-6 with 29 seconds left in the first quarter when Delque Chalk went 26 yards for a score off a blocked punt. Brandon Strupp’s extra point attempt was blocked by sophomore free safety Corey Washington (Alexandria, VA/Edison).

The Mountain Lions cut the lead to 14-13 seconds later on a 32-yard pass from Grossi to Thomas Mayo.

The Rams took a 21-13 with 14:21 left in the second quarter on a 75-yard scamper by Addison.

The Mountain Lions moved to with a point a 21-20 after a two-yard run by Brian Kennedy with 4:28 left in the second quarter.

Shepherd took a 28-20 lead into intermission when Clancy teamed with senior tight end Dominique Jones (San Diego, CA/Horizon/Liberty) on a 16-yard scoring pass with 35 seconds left in the half.

Corey Washington blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt by Strupp on the final play of the half.

Concord struck first in the second half and cut the lead to 28-27 when Grossi teamed with Gary Roach on a two-yard scoring pass with 10:12 left in the third quarter.

The Mountain Lions took a 35-28 lead with 8:55 left in the third quarter when Grossi connected with Rashid Baker on a 12-yard scoring strike. Brian Kennedy rushed for the two-point conversion.

Shepherd came back to knot the game at 35-all when Clancy fired a 53-yard scoring pass to junior wide receiver Robert Byrd (Alexandria, VA/Troy) with 6:16 left in the third quarter.

Concord appeared to be on its way to retaking the lead when Kennedy was racing to the end zone, but sophomore defensive back Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) stripped the ball from Kennedy at the one-yard line and senior outside linebacker Ben Minturn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) recovered the ball in the end zone.

The Rams took the lead for good on a 13-yard jaunt by junior running back Nate Hoyte (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) on the last play of the third quarter.

Addison added another 75-yard touchdown run with 6:23 left in the game to complete the scoring.

Clancy completed 26-of-41 passes for 288 yards, while Grossi was 28-of-42 for 319 yards for Concord.

Hoyte added 64 yards on seven carries for the Rams. Kennedy rushed 15 times for 103 yards to pace Concord. Byrd had seven receptions for 99 yards for Shepherd. Mayo had 13 grabs for 168 yards to lead the Mountain Lions.

The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense as Shepherd amassed 585 yards and Concord had 480.

Junior cornerback Elijah Davis (Silver Spring, MD/Wheaton) had eight tackles and Corey Washington added seven to lead the Rams. Aaorn Martinez had a game-high 12 tackles for Concord.

Shepherd improves to 6-0, 4-0 in WVIAC play, while Concord falls to 4-2, 2-2.

The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at noon for Homecoming.
