ORLANDO, Fla. (Sports Network) - Collin Wagner kicked four field goals, including a 21-yarder with under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, as 11th-ranked Penn State edged LSU, 19-17, in the Capital One Bowl.
Daryll Clark completed 18-of-35 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown for Penn State (11-2), which won eight of the last nine to close out the season.
Derek Moye finished with three catches for 53 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown, while Evan Royster rushed for 68 yards on 18 carries for the Nittany Lions. Andrew Quarless had eight grabs for 88 yards
Jordan Jefferson passed for 201 yards on 13-of-24 passes with a touchdown and an interception, while Stevan Ridley added a one-yard TD run for LSU (9-4), which dropped three of its last five.
After LSU went ahead 17-16 early in the fourth quarter, neither team could get anything going offensively, but Penn State got it together with nearly seven minutes left in the contest.
Starting at its own 31, Clark quickly moved the squad into Tigers territory at the 48. Then after picking up two third downs, the quarterback hit Graham Zug for 17 yards, taking it to the 20.
Stephfon Green's six-yard run allowed the Lions to pick up another third down and make it 1st-and-goal from the eight. However, the offense stalled and Wagner came on to boot the 21-yarder.
Trindon Holliday returned the ensuing kickoff to the LSU 41, then Jefferson picked up a first down at midfield. However, with the Tigers out of timeouts and in hurry-up mode, LSU was whistled for a 15-yard personal foul penalty after a Jefferson completed a short pass to Brandon LaFell. Following an incompletion, the quarterback connected with Rueben Randle for 25 yards, but he fumbled as time expired and Penn State held on.
Penn State opened the scoring with 1:54 left in the first quarter when Clark hit Moye with a 37-yard touchdown pass, but Josh Jasper countered for LSU with a 25-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game early in the second.
Wagner hit a 26-yard field goal with nearly 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the half, then an 18-yard chip shot with four ticks left gave PSU a 13-3 lead at the break.
The Nittany Lions tacked on another field goal by Wagner, this time from 20 yards out with nearly 2 1/2 minutes to play in the third quarter, but LSU came storming back.
Jefferson connected with LaFell for a 24-yard TD with 13 ticks left in the quarter, then Ridley banged in for one-yard score early in the fourth that put the Tigers up 17-16.
